The Cat Who Knew

Lila's hair had always been her safety blanket — long, dark, and the same as everyone else's. Until the day she decided orange was more her speed. The bathroom mirror showed her a stranger, someone bold and unapologetic, someone she wanted to be.

"You think this is cringe?" she asked Barnaby, her aunt's ancient tabby cat. He blinked slowly from his perch on the toilet tank, unimpressed. He'd seen worse. He'd seen Lila cry over a group chat that left her on read. He'd seen her practice conversations in the mirror, pretending to be chill.

Tonight was Maya's birthday party. The one where Lila would finally see HIM — Jordan, who'd sat behind her in bio since September and whose hair fell over his eyes when he concentrated. The Jordan she'd practiced smiling at for weeks.

The front door opened downstairs. Her mom's voice carried up. "Lilaaa? You ready?"

"Yeah! One sec!"

Her hands shook. The orange hair screamed for attention. What if everyone stared? What if Jordan thought she was trying too hard? What if she WAS trying too hard?

Barnaby jumped down, rubbing against her ankle, purring like a tiny motor. He head-butted her calf, demanding to be picked up. She obliged, burying her face in his soft fur. He smelled like sunshine and naps in windowsills.

"Okay," she whispered. "Okay. If you don't care, neither do I."

Her phone buzzed. Maya: *party starts in 20 everyone's asking where u are*

Lila set Barnaby down gently. She straightened her orange hair in the mirror one last time. It wasn't about Jordan anymore. It wasn't about fitting in or being chill or whatever performative nonsense she'd been stressing over.

It was about showing up as herself.

She grabbed her backpack, keys jingling. Barnaby meowed once, sleepy and satisfied. Like he'd known all along she'd figure it out.

"Later, Barns," she said, and walked out the door feeling lighter than she had in months.
