The Cat Who Knew

Maya's bedroom was her sanctuary, or at least that's what she told her 342 Instagram followers. The truth was more pathetic: it was where she retreated after another lunch period spent pretending to laugh at jokes she didn't find funny, her signature black beanie pulled low over her ears like armor.

Then everything went sideways at Tyler's house party.

She'd spent two hours curating her outfit, thirty minutes practicing her casual-but-mysterious entrance, and exactly twelve seconds before disaster struck. Someone shoved a tray of spinach artichoke dip in her face, and somewhere between her second bite and her third desperate laugh, a green fleck lodged itself between her front teeth.

The worst part? She spent forty-five minutes charming half the soccer team with her "authentically awkward" vibe before she caught her reflection in someone's iPhone screen. The spinach had been there the entire time. Every wink, every hair flip, every philosophical quote about "being real"—all undermined by a tiny green invader.

She fled to the backyard, tears stinging, and found herself face-to-face with the neighborhood's weirdest cat—a scrappy calico with one ear that looked perpetually amused. The cat stared at her, then darted toward a small pond where a single goldfish swam in circles, like it was performing its own lonely choreography.

"You saw everything, didn't you?" Maya whispered. "Spinach disaster and all."

The cat's tail flicked. Almost like it was laughing.

But then something shifted. The fish broke its pattern, swimming toward the surface. The cat settled beside Maya, its warm weight pressing against her leg. And for the first time in months, Maya exhaled. No filters. No audience curation. Just her, a judgmental cat, and a fish who apparently didn't care about her embarrassing moments.

She pulled off her hat, letting her hair tumble wild and unstyled. The cat purred.

Her phone buzzed somewhere inside—three notifications, probably people wondering where "mysterious-cool-maya" had gone. Let them wonder.

Maya watched the goldfish trace its new pattern, thinking maybe authenticity wasn't about what you posted. Maybe it was about sitting in a stranger's backyard with a cat who'd witnessed your worst moment and deciding to stay anyway.

The spinach, she decided, could wait until tomorrow to deal with.
