The Cat Who Hit Magic Home Runs

Leo sat on the bench, his heart sinking like a stone in a pond. Another strikeout. Another game where he couldn't even connect his bat with the ball.

"Maybe I should just quit," he whispered, kicking at the dirt.

That's when he heard it—a tiny, tinkling sound like wind chimes. Behind the old wooden dugout, a pair of golden eyes peeked out from the shadows.

Leo gasped. It was the most unusual cat he'd ever seen. Her fur shimmered like spun silver, and the tips of each hair glowed with tiny rainbows that pulsed and shifted with her mood. Right now, she radiated a gentle, encouraging pink.

"Hello, little friend," Leo said softly.

The cat trotted forward and sat next to him on the bench. To Leo's astonishment, she tapped a baseball with her paw—and it floated into the air!

"Whoa!" Leo jumped back, then laughed as the ball bobbed around him like a curious bubble.

The cat purred, the sound like music. She tapped the ball again, and it zipped through the air in a perfect arc, landing softly in Leo's glove.

"You want to help me practice?" Leo asked, his eyes wide.

For the next hour, Leo and the magical cat played catch. Every time the cat's whiskers twitched, the baseball did something new—spiraled like a tornado, zigzagged like lightning, or glowed like a miniature moon. Leo laughed so hard his sides hurt.

"What's your name?" he finally asked.

The cat nudged his hand, and in his mind, he heard the name: Stardust.

"Stardust," he whispered, "I wish you could come to my game tomorrow."

Stardust's rainbow hair flashed a brilliant green. She touched Leo's forehead, and suddenly he felt warm all over, like sunshine melting winter ice.

"You already have everything you need inside you," her voice echoed in his heart. "Confidence isn't about being perfect. It's about believing in yourself, even when you miss."

The next day, Leo stepped up to the plate. His knees trembled, but then he remembered Stardust's words. He took a deep breath, swung his bat—and connected!

CRACK!

The ball sailed through the air in a perfect arc. Home run!

Leo's teammates cheered as he rounded the bases. In the stands, a flash of silver fur caught his eye. Stardust's rainbow-tipped hair sparkled in the sunlight, and her golden eyes shone with pride.

Leo smiled. He knew Stardust would always be with him, not just when he won, but whenever he needed a little magic—and a little courage—to keep trying.
