The Cat Who Hit a Home Run

Ten-year-old Toby loved two things more than anything in the world: his orange tabby cat Whiskers, and playing baseball in the park near his house. Every Saturday morning, Toby would pack his glove and bat, and Whiskers would trot happily beside him, tail held high like a fuzzy flag.

One hot July afternoon, Toby hit his baseball farther than ever before. It soared over the trees and disappeared behind Old Man Jenkins' mysterious garden fence. Whiskers immediately darted after it, her fur standing on end with excitement.

"Whiskers, wait!" Toby called, chasing his cat through a hole in the fence.

What he found made his jaw drop. Behind the overgrown garden lay a secret swimming hole, the water sparkling like diamonds in the sunlight. And there, sitting on a lily pad in the middle of the pond, was the most unusual friend Toby had ever seen—a tiny green frog wearing a miniature baseball cap!

"You're the first human to find my magical pond," said the frog, whose name was Splash. "I used to be a regular frog until I wished for adventure. Now I can speak, and I can help you find your baseball if you promise to visit me."

Whiskers purred approvingly as Splash hopped into the water. Amazingly, the frog began swimming faster than any Olympic champion, diving deep and surfacing with Toby's baseball clenched gently in his webbed feet.

"Thank you!" Toby exclaimed, accepting his recovered treasure. "From now on, you're not just a frog—you're my friend."

Every day that summer, Toby returned to the secret pond. He taught Splash how to properly hold a baseball (with webbed feet, this was tricky), and Splash showed Toby how to swim like a champion. Whiskers would watch from the shore, occasionally swatting at dragonflies.

Toby learned that the best adventures come from being open to surprises and making unexpected friends. Sometimes, he discovered, a simple game of baseball could lead to magical friendships that would last forever.
