The Cat Who Guarded the Stars

Lily sat by her bedroom window, watching flashes of lightning dance across the dark sky. She had just moved to a new house and hadn't made any friends yet.

Suddenly, a soft meow made her look down. A golden cat with emerald eyes sat on her windowsill, staring at her with unusual intelligence.

"Hello there," Lily whispered, opening the window. The cat hopped inside and nuzzled her hand. "Are you lonely too?"

The cat purred and trotted to her closet, pulling out an old flashlight. When Lily turned it on, the beam of light shone through the cat's golden fur, creating a glowing path that led out her window and up into the clouds.

"Come, friend," the cat said—or maybe Lily just imagined it.

Following the magical light, Lily climbed a rainbow staircase that appeared in the lightning flashes. At the top sat an ancient sphinx made of stardust, its cat face watching her with wise, twinkling eyes.

"You seek friendship," the sphinx spoke gently. "True friendship isn't found—it's built with kindness, courage, and an open heart."

The sphinx gave Lily a small silver pouch. "These are star-seeds. Plant them, and they will grow into friendships that will weather any storm."

Lightning flashed again, and Lily found herself back in her room, the golden cat curled beside her. The next day at school, she smiled at a girl sitting alone, then helped a boy pick up his dropped books. By lunchtime, she had three new friends.

That night, the cat was gone, but Lily found a single golden cat hair on her pillow—and knew that sometimes, the best friends appear when you least expect them, like magic in a lightning storm.
