The Cat Who Grew Green Hair
Lily's best friend was a cat named Mittens, but he wasn't like other cats. Mittens had purple eyes and loved to eat spinach from the garden. Every afternoon, they'd sit together by the old swimming pool behind Lily's house, sharing spinach leaves and watching the clouds.
One day, Mittens ate a glowing spinach leaf that shimmered like a tiny star. Within minutes, his orange fur began to change. Green curls sprouted from his ears, then his tail became a cascade of leafy vines. His hair grew longer and longer until it flowed like a river around him.
"Mittens!" Lily gasped. "You're magnificent!"
But Mittens seemed sad. He couldn't jump or play with his new heavy hair. The other cats in the neighborhood would surely laugh.
That's when Lily had an idea. She led Mittens to the pool, which had been empty for years. "This will be your garden!"
They worked together, planting spinach seeds in the pool's deep basin. Mittens used his magical green hair to water the plants—each curl flowed with sparkling water whenever he purred. Within a week, the pool transformed into a lush garden.
But something wonderful happened. As the spinach grew, Mittens' hair began to change back. He realized his magic wasn't meant to stay in his fur—it was meant to be shared.
By autumn, the swimming pool was the most beautiful garden in town, filled with emerald spinach that made anyone who ate it feel kind and brave. Mittens returned to his ordinary orange self, though he still had one small green curl behind his left ear.
Lily learned that day that true friendship means helping each other grow, and sometimes the most magical transformations are the ones we give away to make the world more beautiful.
