The Cat Who Fixed Broken Things

Lily discovered the orange cat behind the old palm tree in her backyard. His fur was the color of sunset, bright and glowing against the green leaves. He blinked at her with emerald eyes.

"I'm Marmalade," the cat said. Lily gasped. Cats couldn't talk!

"I can fix broken things," Marmalade purred. "Show me what needs mending."

Lily thought of her bicycle, tangled in its rusty cable. The chain wouldn't move, and she couldn't ride to school. Grandpa said it was hopeless.

Marmalade trotted to the bicycle and touched the twisted cable with his paw. Sparks of orange light danced around the metal. The cable untangled itself, shiny and new again.

"How?" Lily whispered.

"Magic paw," Marmalade winked. "Now show me your garden."

Lily's grandmother loved flowers, but after she passed away, the garden had wilted. Lily pointed sadly at the brown daisies.

Marmalade walked among the flowers, his tail swishing. Orange dust floated from his fur and settled on the petals. Something amazing happened—the daisies stretched upward, their white faces opening wide. They kept blooming and closing, again and again, as if they couldn't decide whether to sleep or wake.

"They're like zombie flowers!" Lily laughed. "They keep coming back to life!"

Marmalade purred. "Everything wants to grow, Lily. Even when it seems gone forever, life finds a way."

Lily understood then. Her grandmother wasn't gone—she lived in the flowers, in the stories Lily remembered, in the love that never faded.

"Will you stay?" Lily asked, scratching behind Marmalade's ears.

"As long as you have broken things that need fixing," the orange cat promised.

That night, Lily fell asleep under the palm tree, Marmalade curled against her side. The zombie flowers glowed in the moonlight, opening and closing like tiny stars that refused to go out.

Some things, Lily learned, never truly break. They just need a little magic—and a friend who believes.
