The Cat Who Dreamed of Courage
Muffin was the smallest cat in Mrs. Green's garden, with fur as soft as dandelion fluff and a tail that twitched when she was nervous. She spent her days watching the forest edge, where something enormous moved between the trees.
"That's a bear," Mrs. Green would say, pouring fresh water into Muffin's bowl. "Bears are fierce and strong. You stay here, little Muffin. You're safe."
But Muffin didn't want to be safe. She wanted to be brave like the bear.
One afternoon, while chasing a butterfly, Muffin discovered something amazing behind the garden shed. A patch of emerald-green spinach grew in a perfect circle, shimmering like it had been sprinkled with fairy dust. Each leaf glowed with a gentle light.
A old turtle crawled from beneath a cabbage. "Magic spinach," it whispered. "One bite gives you courage beyond measure. But courage comes from within, little one. The spinach only helps you see what's already there."
Muffin nibbled a single leaf. It tasted like sunshine and rainbow dreams.
Suddenly, the forest didn't seem so scary anymore. Muffin's heart felt bigger, stronger. She trotted toward the trees, her tail held high.
Deep in the woods, she found the bear—a massive creature with warm brown eyes, tangled by blackberry vines. The bear whimpered, stuck and frightened.
Muffin didn't think. She didn't run. She scrambled up the bear's fur like a tiny mountain climber and began gnawing through the vines, strand by strand. When the bear was free, it wrapped Muffin in a gentle hug.
"You saved me," the bear rumbled. "You're the bravest creature I've ever met."
Muffin purred, understanding now that true courage wasn't about size or strength. It was about helping others, even when you're scared.
Every day after that, Muffin visited her friend the bear. They shared stories, sunshine, and sometimes spinach—though the bear preferred honey, and Muffin discovered she didn't need magic anymore to be brave.
She was just Muffin, the little cat with the enormous heart, and that was more than enough.
