The Cat Who Drank from the Moon

Luna was a small orange cat with the softest fur in all of Greenwood Village. She lived with Mrs. Higgins, who made the best tuna sandwiches and always left a bowl of fresh water by the window. But Luna had a secret—she was magical.

Every night when the moon rose, Luna would sneak out through the cat flap and follow the silver path of moonlight to the old fountain in the town square. Legend said that a tiny sphinx lived there, guarding the most special water in the world.

One evening, Luna heard a soft voice.

"Little cat, I've been waiting for you."

Luna's green eyes went wide. Perched on the fountain's edge was no ordinary creature—it was a sphinx the size of a teacup, with tiny lion paws, feathery wings, and wise amber eyes. Her fur sparkled like starlight.

"I'm Cleo," the sphinx said. "This fountain holds moon-water. One sip gives you the power to speak with any creature. One sip gives you the courage to help those in need."

Luna's tail twitched with excitement. She'd always wanted to understand what the birds were saying!

"But," Cleo continued, "this gift is for those who help others first. Tonight, a baby bluebird fell from its nest. Can you find it?"

Luna nodded. She followed the sound of chirping to the big oak tree behind the library. There, tangled in some bushes, was a frightened bluebird chick. Luna gently used her soft paws to free it, then meowed loudly until the mother bird heard them and swooped down with grateful chirps.

When Luna returned to the fountain, Cleo smiled. "You have a brave and kind heart."

The sphinx dipped her paw into the sparkling water and touched Luna's forehead. "Now you can understand all creatures, and they will understand you. Use this gift to make friends wherever you go."

From that night on, Luna became famous throughout Greenwood. She helped cats negotiate with squirrels, translated for nervous puppies, and once even convinced a grumpy owl to give back a stolen toy. She and Cleo met every full moon, always looking for new ways to help their animal friends.

And sometimes, when you see a cat sitting very still by a fountain, listening carefully to the birds—just maybe—that cat is drinking from the magic of friendship too.
