The Cat Who Cracked the Zombie Mystery
Barnaby was no ordinary cat. He wore a tiny blue hat pulled down over his ears and loved to spy on the magical creatures living in the garden behind his house. From behind the rosebushes, he watched fairies paint flowers and gnomes polish their mushrooms. But Barnaby had never seen anything quite like what he spotted that Tuesday evening.
Something green was shuffling near the old oak tree. It moved slowly, arms stretched forward, groaning softly. Barnaby's whiskers twitched. Could it be a zombie? He had heard the older cats whisper about zombies—creatures who weren't quite alive, stumbling around at night looking for friends but only scaring everyone away.
Barnaby adjusted his hat and crept closer, his paws silent on the grass. He was the best spy in the neighborhood, and this was a mystery worth solving.
The zombie stopped by the garden pond and sat down with a splash. Then, to Barnaby's surprise, the zombie started swimming—doing graceful laps, flips, and even a happy cannonball off a lily pad. This zombie didn't seem scary at all.
"Hello?" Barnaby meowed from the bank.
The zombie jumped and nearly sank. "Oh! Hello, little cat. I'm Zed."
"You're... you're a zombie?" Barnaby asked.
Zed nodded sadly. "Yes, but I'm not scary. I'm just lonely. Everyone runs away before I can even say hello."
Barnaby's heart hurt for him. "I'm Barnaby. Do you want to play?"
Zed's face lit up like a lantern. "Really?"
"Really!" Barnaby put his paw forward. "Friends don't run away."
That night, under twinkling stars, a cat and a zombie went swimming together, splashing and racing until the moon smiled down at them. They discovered something magical: sometimes the scariest things are just the loneliest, and the best adventures start with a simple hello. Barnaby adjusted his wet hat and purred. Being a spy was exciting, but being a friend was even better.
