The Cat Who Could Taste Lightning
Maya was a curious girl with a secret. She could talk to animals. Not in a loud, everyone-can-hear way, but in a quiet, magical way that happened inside her heart.
Her best friend was Barnaby, an orange tabby cat with the softest paws in the world. Every morning, Maya's grandmother would make breakfast with fresh spinach from their garden. Maya loved those mornings, especially when Barnaby would come running through the back door, his bell jingling like tiny laughter.
One evening, a terrible storm rolled in. Lightning cracked across the sky like jagged lines of silver light. Maya watched from her window, feeling brave and small at the same time. Suddenly, she saw something amazing—a streak of lightning that didn't just flash. It danced!
"Barnaby!" Maya whispered. "Did you see that?"
The cat's amber eyes widened. He placed his furry palm on Maya's hand, and suddenly, she could hear his thoughts too. *The lightning is lonely,* Barnaby said. *It needs someone to play with.*
Maya's heart raced. She grabbed her spinach sandwich from dinner and ran outside, barefoot in the rain. Barnaby followed, his paws splashing through puddles.
"Hello!" Maya called to the sky. "We're here to play!"
The next bolt of lightning didn't scare her. Instead, it swooped down like a glowing ribbon, weaving around them. Maya felt warm all over, as if she had swallowed sunshine. When the lightning touched Barnaby's paw, sparks the color of rainbow sherbet shot out.
*It's playing tag!* Barnaby purred. *Catch it if you can!*
Maya and the cat spent the whole storm running and jumping with their new friend. The lightning made shapes—a bunny, a castle, even a dragon that breathed flowers instead of fire. Maya shared her sandwich with the sky, and she could have sworn the lightning sparkled brighter.
As dawn broke, the storm faded. "Will we see you again?" Maya asked.
The lightning flashed once more, forming the shape of a heart before disappearing into the clouds.
Maya learned something wonderful that night: even the scariest things just want a friend. Sometimes, all it takes is courage, a kind heart, and maybe a little spinach to share.
