The Cat Who Could Talk to Lightning
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice or napped in sunbeams, Mittens had a secret — she could talk to lightning.
One stormy afternoon, Mittens sat by her goldfish bowl, watching Bubbles swim round and round. "You're lucky to live in water," Mittens purred. "When lightning comes, I have an important job."
Bubbles blew bubbles that floated to the surface. He knew about Mittens' special gift.
A crack of thunder shook the house. Mittens' ears perked up. She could hear lightning's voice — it sounded like sparkles and giggles all mixed together.
"Help!" the lightning called. "I'm stuck in the old television cable outside!"
Mittens bounded to the window and saw something amazing — a tiny spy made entirely of light, trapped in the thick black cable that connected the house to the telephone pole.
"Hold on, Spark!" Mittens meowed. She remembered her friend Oliver, the boy who lived next door. He knew about science and electricity.
But Oliver was at school, and Mittens needed to act fast. The lightning spy was fading, growing dimmer by the second.
Bubbles splashed in his bowl, sending water droplets flying. Mittens had an idea. Water conducts electricity!
Carefully, she dipped her paw into the goldfish bowl and dashed outside. The rain poured down, and Mittens climbed up to where the cable hung. With her wet paw, she touched the cable.
ZING! A brilliant burst of light shot through her paw and into the sky. Spark the lightning spy was free!
"Thank you, Mittens!" Spark flashed, dancing across the clouds in a magnificent display. "For your bravery, I grant you one wish."
Mittens thought for a moment. "I wish for all the lonely cats in the world to find a friend who understands them, just like I have Bubbles."
From that day on, whenever there was a storm, Mittens would sit by the window, watching her friend Spark paint the sky with light. And sometimes, late at night, she would tell Bubbles stories about her adventures as the only cat who could talk to lightning.
The other cats might not have believed her, but Mittens knew the truth — sometimes the most magical friendships come from the most unexpected places, even from a lightning bolt stuck in a cable.
