The Cat Who Could See Secrets
Mittens was not an ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunny patches, Mittens liked to watch. She was the best **spy** in the neighborhood.
Every day, the orange tabby would creep through the tall grass, peeking through fences and around corners. She knew which neighbors baked cookies on Tuesdays. She knew which dog dug holes under the porch. She knew everything—or so she thought.
Then came the day she met the **goldfish**.
He lived in a round glass bowl on Mrs. Willow's porch. His name was Finbar, and he was the most beautiful goldfish Mittens had ever seen, with scales like tiny orange coins and a tail like a flowing ribbon.
"Good morning, **cat**," Finbar said, popping his head above the **water**.
Mittens nearly fell off the porch. "You can talk!"
"Of course I can talk," Finbar bubbled. "And I can show you magic, if you're brave enough to see it."
He swam in a circle, and suddenly the water in his bowl began to glow. It swirled with colors like a rainbow caught in a glass. Mittens leaned closer, her whiskers twitching.
"Look into the water," Finbar whispered. "Really look."
Mittens stared. At first, she saw only her own reflection. But then—the water rippled, and she saw something wonderful. She could see through the water like it was a window! She saw birds building nests high in trees she'd never climbed. She saw flowers blooming in gardens she'd never visited. She saw children playing in a park two streets away.
"The water remembers everything it touches," Finbar explained. "It carries stories from everywhere it flows—raindrops, puddles, streams. All those stories are here, waiting to be seen."
From that day on, Mittens visited Finbar every morning. She was still a spy, but now she spied on beautiful things—sunsets over distant hills, baby birds learning to fly, rainbows appearing after storms.
And Mittens learned something important: the best secrets aren't the ones you keep hidden. The best secrets are the ones you share with a friend.
Some days, she still chased mice. Some days, she still napped in sunny patches. But every afternoon, Mittens the cat and Finbar the goldfish would sit together, watching the magic swirl in the water, seeing the whole world from one little glass bowl on a quiet porch.
