The Cat Who Could Not Swim

Mittens was a fluffy orange cat who was afraid of everything. Loud thunder, buzzing bees, and especially water. But one summer afternoon, everything changed.

A storm was brewing. Mittens hid under the porch, her paws over her ears. That's when she heard a tiny voice.

"Please help!"

Mittens peeked out. A glass bowl sat near the garden edge, tipped over by the wind. Inside flopped a small goldfish, gasping for water.

"I'm Finn," the goldfish said. "The wind knocked over my bowl."

Mittens should have eaten him. That's what cats do. But Finn looked so sad, and Mittens knew what it felt like to be scared.

"I'll help you," Mittens said, surprising herself.

She carefully lifted Finn into her mouth. He tasted like pond water and adventure. Mittens carried him to the garden pond, but the water level was too low. Finn would dry up before the rain came.

"I need more water," Finn said.

Suddenly, lightning struck the old papaya tree in the yard. CRACK! A massive papaya fruit tumbled down, landing right beside the pond.

Mittens had an idea. She clawed at the soft fruit until juice spilled out, then pushed it toward Finn. The sweet, watery fruit created a perfect little pool!

Finn swam happily in the papaya juice. "You saved me, Mittens!"

"I saved a fish," Mittens purred, amazed. "I'm not afraid of you."

"And I'm not afraid of cats," Finn said. "Because you're different."

When the rain finally came, Finn swam into the deep pond. But every day after, he'd swim near the surface when Mittens visited. They became the unlikeliest of friends.

Mittens learned something important that day: being brave isn't about not being scared. It's about helping others, even when you're trembling. And sometimes, the best friends come in the most surprising packages — even fish and cats.

Now whenever lightning flashed across the sky, Mittens didn't hide. She sat by the pond, watching for her goldfish friend, her heart full of courage and papaya-sweet memories.
