The Cat Who Could Control Lightning
Mia hated spinach. Every night at dinner, her parents made her eat three spoonfuls of the green, leafy vegetable. But Mia had a secret – she fed her spinach to Mittens, her fluffy orange cat.
One evening during a summer thunderstorm, Mia noticed something strange. Mittens's fur started to glow after eating the spinach! Little sparks of lightning danced between the cat's whiskers, making them stand up like tiny antennas. Mia's own hair began to float as static electricity filled the room.
"Mittens, you're magical!" Mia whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.
The next day, Mia's class was swimming at the community pool. Tommy, the neighborhood bully, had pushed Mia's little brother into the deep end. None of the adults were watching, and Mia's brother couldn't swim well.
Without thinking, Mia grabbed Mittens from her backpack. The cat, full of his morning spinach, had been storing up lightning magic all day.
"Help Mittens, please!" Mia cried.
Mittens leaped from Mia's arms, landing gracefully by the pool's edge. His orange fur crackled with blue lightning as he extended one paw toward the water. A gentle bolt of magic shot from his claws, not to hurt anyone, but to create a safe, glowing path through the water. Mia's brother grabbed onto the magical light and pulled himself to safety.
Everyone gasped. Mittens purred proudly, his lightning now fading to a soft shimmer.
That night, Mia didn't give Mittens her spinach. She ate every bite herself, smiling as she thought about how sometimes the things we think are yucky can become the most powerful gifts of all. And from that day on, whenever thunderstorms rolled through their neighborhood, Mia and Mittens would watch the lightning together, knowing they shared a magical secret that no bully could ever take away.
