The Cat Who Collected Moonlight

Lily hated spinach. Every Tuesday night, her mother served the green leaves on her plate, and every Tuesday night, Lily pushed them around with her fork.

"Spinach makes you strong," Mama would say. But Lily didn't want to be strong. She wanted to be magical.

One evening, as the full moon glowed through her window, Lily spotted something peculiar. A small orange cat sat on her windowsill, wearing a tiny purple hat.

"Hello," Lily whispered.

The cat blinked. "Hello. I'm Barnaby. Do you have any spinach?"

Lily gasped. "You can talk! And you want my spinach?"

Barnaby leaped into her room. "Not just any spinach. Moon-grown spinach. The leaves that absorb moonlight become star-fuel. I collect it for the wishing stars."

"Wishing stars?"

"The stars that grant children's dreams," Barnaby explained, adjusting his tiny hat. "But tonight, my supply is low. And without moon-spinach, the stars will fade."

Lily thought of her unfinished dinner. She crept to the kitchen and returned with her untouched spinach.

"Will this work?"

Barnaby's eyes widened. "This is perfect!" He placed the spinach in his purple hat. The hat began to glow, and the spinach leaves sparkled like tiny emeralds.

"The hat amplifies the moonlight stored inside," Barnaby said. "Watch."

He tapped the hat, and the spinach floated up, up, up through the ceiling, past the roof, into the sky. Lily watched through her window as the glowing leaves sprinkled across the stars. The whole night sky shimmered brighter.

"Thank you, Lily," Barnaby said. "Because of you, tonight every child who makes a wish will have their dream come true."

Lily smiled. Maybe spinach wasn't so bad after all.

Barnaby winked. "Come Tuesday, I'll be back. But don't tell anyone about the spinach. It's our secret."

From that night on, Lily ate every green leaf on her plate. And sometimes, just sometimes, she saw a flash of purple in the sky, and a tiny hat among the stars.
