The Cat Who Collected Lightning
In a tiny village where the sun painted the sky pink every evening, there lived a small orange cat named Mango. Mango wasn't an ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice or napped in windows, Mango had a very special hobby.
Every evening, Mango would climb to the top of the tallest palm tree in the village and wait. His favorite palm tree, the one with leaves that shimmered like silver, would bend its fronds gently to help him climb.
"Are you coming tonight, little friend?" the palm tree would whisper, its voice sounding like wind through hollow reeds.
"Yes!" Mango would purr, settling into the perfect spot. "I can feel it coming."
What was coming, only Mango and the palm tree knew. The other cats laughed at him. "Cats don't watch storms," they said, grooming their whiskers. "Cats hide from storms!"
But Mango knew better.
When the first rumble of thunder rolled across the sky like a giant drum, Mango would lift his right paw and open it wide, showing his palm to the dark clouds above. His palm wasn't ordinary — it had a small, star-shaped mark that glowed whenever lightning was near.
Then it would happen. A bolt of lightning would flash across the sky, bright and beautiful, and instead of being afraid, Mango would catch a tiny piece of it in the palm of his paw. The lightning would sparkle there like a captured firefly, warm and gentle, not hot at all.
"Got one!" Mango would cheer, and the palm tree would laugh, its fronds shaking with joy.
Mango would carry his precious lightning piece down the tree and deliver it to someone who needed it most. Maybe to Mrs. Lopez, who was afraid of the dark. Maybe to little Pedro, who had bad dreams. The lightning would glow softly all night long, like a nightlight made of magic, making everyone feel safe and brave.
One terrible night, the biggest storm anyone had ever seen rolled in. Lightning flashed everywhere, and thunder shook the houses. The village was scared. Even the other cats hid under beds.
But not Mango. He climbed his palm tree and saw something strange — the lightning was wild and angry, not gentle like usual. It was hitting the ground and starting small fires!
Mango had an idea. A wonderful, crazy idea. He lifted both paws, opened his palms wide, and whispered to the storm, "Please! Let me help you!"
The wildest lightning bolt, bigger and brighter than all the others, zipped toward him. Mango caught it in both palms, and it filled him with warmth and courage. Suddenly, he understood — the lightning wasn't angry. It was lonely! It had no friends, no one to play with.
"I'll be your friend!" Mango promised. And the lightning calmed down, curling around his paws like a sleepy kitten.
All night long, Mango and his lightning friend danced in the sky, making beautiful patterns that filled the villagers with wonder instead of fear. Children pointed and laughed. Even the other cats came out to watch, their eyes wide with amazement.
By morning, the storm was gone. But Mango had a new companion — a small ball of lightning that lived in a special lantern in his room, glowing gently whenever someone needed a little extra light in their life.
And from that day on, no cat in the village ever laughed at Mango again. Instead, they would climb the palm tree with him, paws open, waiting to see what magic might fall from the sky.
Because sometimes, the most wonderful friends are the ones you find when you're brave enough to look up.
