The Cat Who Climbed the Pyramid

Maya's cat, Pancake, had zero respect for social boundaries—or headphones. The orange tabby had just bat-winged her iPhone off the bed, sending it sliding across the floor like a hockey puck. "Seriously?" Maya groaned, scrambling to retrieve it. The charging cable dangled precariously from the wall, its white cord dangling like a limp noodle. Like everything else in her life, it was barely holding itself together.

At school the next day, Maya stood at the bottom of the cafeteria pyramid—geek zone, far from the popular table where Jordan sat with his effortlessly cool crew. She poked at her lunch, moving the spinach around her plate like it was radioactive green sludge. "You gonna actually eat that, or just rearrange it?" Her best friend, Riley, smirked. "It's called a balanced meal, Ri. Look it up." Maya flipped her off, grinning.

That's when Jordan approached. ACTUAL Jordan. His eyes locked on Maya's tray. "Hey, you gonna finish that spinach?"

Maya blinked. Was this a prank? "Uh, no?"

"Can I have it?" He sounded weirdly earnest. "I'm trying this whole 'eating healthy' thing. My trainer says leafy greens..." He made a face like he'd just swallowed lemon juice.

The whole table watched as Maya slid her tray toward him. Jordan sat down. Actual Jordan, at HER table. The pyramid had just inverted itself. "So," he said, mouth full of spinach, "you have a cat?"

"Uh, yeah. Why?"

"Your Instagram. Pancake, right? That video where he attacks your charging cable?" Jordan laughed. "My cat does the SAME thing. It's like they're in some secret society."

Maya's brain short-circuited. Jordan from the popular table followed HER? The bottom-of-the-pyramid girl with the vegetable-hating cat?

"Dude," she said, "Pancake once dragged my iPhone into the litter box because I wouldn't share my AirPods. We're basically living the same life."

Jordan grinned, spinach stuck in his teeth. "We should start a club. The Cat Cable Destroyers Union."

Maya didn't become popular overnight. But as Jordan kept sitting with them, she realized something: the pyramid wasn't unclimbable. Sometimes you just needed the right weird connection—and a cat with zero respect for personal boundaries—to find your footing.
