The Cat Who Climbed Into Yesterday

Lily loved building pyramids. Not the real ones in Egypt, but pyramids made of wooden blocks in her bedroom. Every night after school, she'd stack them higher and higher until they touched her lamp.

Her cat, Mittens, always watched. Mittens was an orange tabby with white paws who loved knocking things over. But never the pyramids. She'd sit beside them, her green eyes wide, as if she knew something magical was hiding inside those wooden blocks.

One stormy Tuesday, the sky turned dark purple. Rain tapped against Lily's window like little fingers. Thunder rumbled like a giant tummy grumbling.

Suddenly—CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed so bright it turned everything white.

Mittens jumped onto Lily's pyramid. But instead of knocking it over, she stood on the very top block, her fur standing straight up. The lightning outside struck again, and something incredible happened.

The wooden pyramid began to glow. Golden light poured from between the blocks. Mittens meowed, but it sounded like ancient music.

"Mittens!" Lily cried, reaching for her cat.

But Mittens and the pyramid were fading, turning into golden sparkles. Lily grabbed Mittens's tail just as the room dissolved.

*Whoosh!*

They landed somewhere warm and sandy. Pyramids—REAL pyramids—rose against a starry sky. People in flowing robes walked by, carrying baskets and clay pots.

Mittens stood beside Lily, but now she wore a tiny golden collar. A girl about Lily's age ran toward them, her eyes wide with wonder.

"A cat! And she came through the Pyramid of Returning!" The girl laughed and hugged Mittens. "I'm Amara. My cat was lost this morning. We've been praying to the Great Cat Goddess to help us."

Lily realized something amazing. The lightning had opened a door between worlds, and Mittens had brought them here to help.

"I'm Lily," she said. "We'll find your cat."

They searched through the ancient marketplace, past vendors selling sweet dates and colorful fabrics. Finally, behind a pottery stand, they found a tiny kitten stuck in a jar.

Mittens rubbed against the kitten, purring so loudly the jar vibrated. The kitten's fear vanished. Amara lifted her friend free.

"Thank you," Amara whispered, pressing something into Lily's hand. A small wooden cat carving. "So you'll remember."

The sky began to glow again. Lightning flashed across the Egyptian sky, and Lily felt herself being pulled back.

*Whoosh!*

She landed on her bedroom floor. The pyramid of blocks stood unchanged beside her. Mittens curled up on her bed, washing her white paws. In Lily's hand, the wooden cat carving was warm and real.

Outside, the storm had passed. Stars twinkled through the window.

Lily learned something that night: magic hides in ordinary places. Sometimes you just need a curious cat, a stack of blocks, and a little lightning to find it.

And the best adventures? They're the ones where you help someone along the way.
