The Cat Who Chased Starballs
Lily's orange tabby cat, Marmalade, always chased the strangest things. Butterflies, leaves, shadows — but nothing prepared Lily for the day Marmalade chased a baseball right through their backyard fence.
"Wait!" Lily called, squeezing through the loose board after her cat.
What she found made her gasp. The baseball hadn't rolled away. It was floating, glowing like a tiny moon, bobbing above a shimmering pool of silver water. Marmalade sat at the edge, tail twitching with excitement.
"What is this place?" Lily whispered.
A thick golden cable stretched from the pool's center into the clouds, humming with a soft rainbow light. Then she heard giggling. Small star-shaped creatures, no bigger than fireflies, were playing catch with another glowing baseball.
"We're the Star-Keepers!" chimed the smallest one, floating closer. "We collect dreams and wishes!"
Marmalade meowed happily, and one of the Star-Keepers tossed her the glowing baseball. The cat batted it gently, and it transformed into a cascade of sparkles.
"Your cat found us!" said a Star-Keeper. "Only curious creatures with pure hearts can see the Dream Cable."
They showed Lily how they stacked wishes into a beautiful glowing pyramid beside the pool. "Each layer is someone's hope," they explained. "Friendship, bravery, kindness — they build the strongest dreams."
"Can I add one?" Lily asked.
"Of course! What does your heart wish?"
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for toys, candy, or adventures. But looking at Marmalade purring beside her, she knew what mattered most.
"I wish that every child and every cat could have a friend as wonderful as mine."
The wish floated up and became the pyramid's brightest point, shining golden through all the layers below.
"The best wishes are ones we make for others," the Star-Keepers said, smiling.
When it was time to leave, the pool rippled once more. Lily found herself back in her yard, Marmalade curled peacefully beside her. The baseball was ordinary again. But in her pocket, she found a tiny glowing stone — a piece of the Dream Pyramid.
She smiled, hugging her cat close. The best magic, she realized, wasn't in other worlds. It was right here, in friendship and kindness. And in a curious cat who knew exactly where adventures were waiting.
