The Cat Who Chased Lightning
Barnaby was a small orange cat with the biggest dreams in the neighborhood. Every night, he sat by the window, watching lightning dance across the sky like glowing ribbons.
"I want to catch lightning," Barnaby whispered to himself. "Then I'd be the most amazing cat in the world."
One stormy evening, while running through Mrs. Higgins' garden to escape the rain, Barnaby discovered something magical. The old swimming pool, usually empty and dull, was filled with rainwater that sparkled like liquid diamonds.
And there, swimming in circles, was a single goldfish with scales that shimmered in every color of the rainbow.
"Hello, little cat," said the goldfish. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit during a storm."
Barnaby's whiskers trembled. "You can talk?"
"I can do more than talk," the goldfish replied. "My name is Gleam, and I grant one wish to cats who are pure of heart. But you must solve my riddle first."
Barnaby puffed out his chest. "I'm ready!"
Gleam swam gracefully. "What runs but has no legs? What strikes but has no hands? What brightens the darkest night but disappears by morning?"
Barnaby thought hard. He watched the sky as lightning flashed, and suddenly, he understood.
"Lightning!" Barnaby cried. "The answer is lightning!"
Gleam's scales glowed even brighter. "Correct! Now, what is your wish?"
Barnaby paused. All his life, he had wanted to catch lightning to be special. But now, looking at Gleam swimming alone in the pool, he realized something important.
"I wish," Barnaby said softly, "for a friend who will stay with me forever. Not someone to impress, but someone to share adventures with."
Gleam smiled. "That is the bravest wish of all."
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck nearby, and magic sparkles filled the air. When they faded, Gleam was no longer just a fish. She had transformed into a small, golden cat with shimmering fur.
"Thank you for choosing friendship over glory," Gleam purred. "Now we'll have adventures together, every single day."
And that's how Barnaby the cat learned that the best treasure wasn't catching lightning at all—it was finding a true friend.
