The Cat Who Chased Lightning

catlightningzombierunning

Emma's cat, Mittens, was no ordinary pet. Every night, when lightning flashed across the sky, Mittens would dash to the window, her green eyes wide with wonder. She wasn't afraid—she was enchanted.

One stormy evening, Emma woke to find Mittens scratching at the back door. The little girl followed her cat into the garden, where lightning painted the sky in brilliant streaks of purple and gold. Suddenly, Mittens took off, running toward the old oak tree at the edge of the woods.

"Mittens, wait!" Emma called, running after her.

Under the tree's twisted branches, they found something surprising: a small, muddy creature that looked like a zombie bunny from Emma's storybooks—floppy ear, patchy fur, and a wobbly walk. But instead of being scary, the little creature looked lonely and scared.

"Are you lost?" Emma whispered.

The bunny sniffled, and Emma realized it wasn't a zombie at all—just a baby rabbit covered in mud, shivering from the storm. Mittens purred gently, nuzzling the little bunny as if to say, "Don't worry."

Emma scooped up the bunny while Mittens led the way home, running through puddles that sparkled like diamonds in the lightning flashes. Together, they warmed the bunny by the fire, feeding it warm milk from a saucer.

By morning, the bunny was clean, fluffy, and frisky. Emma named it Sparky, after the lightning that had brought them together.

Emma learned that night that scary things sometimes aren't what they seem—and that kindness can turn any "monster" into a friend. Mittens seemed especially proud, as if she'd known all along that the best adventures are the ones where you make new friends.

And sometimes, Emma thought, the most magical things happen when you're brave enough to follow where curiosity leads—even if it means running into a storm.
