The Cat Who Chased Lightning
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats slept in sunbeams, Mittens had a secret job: she was a neighborhood spy. Every afternoon, she watched the children play baseball in the park from her favorite perch behind the old oak tree.
One sweltering summer evening, dark clouds gathered overhead. The children ran home as the first rumble of thunder shook the ground. But nobody noticed something important — Billy's lucky baseball rolled into the deep end of the swimming pool!
Mittens saw everything. Her green eyes widened as a brilliant flash of lightning illuminated the sinking ball.
"I must help!" Mittens thought, though she'd always been afraid of water.
Rain poured down as another lightning bolt crackled across the sky, casting a magical blue glow over the swimming pool. In that instant, Mittens saw something amazing — tiny raindrops danced on the water's surface, creating little bridges of light!
The brave cat crept closer. She remembered her grandmother's stories: "When lightning strikes the right way, water becomes solid for those with pure hearts."
Mittens stepped onto the glowing raindrops. One paw, two paws, three! She was walking on water! Her fluffy fur stood on end with static electricity, making her look like a little lightning herself.
She reached the center and nudged the precious baseball with her nose. Just as another flash of lightning illuminated the whole pool, Mittens grabbed the ball and scampered back to dry land.
The next morning, Billy found his lucky baseball sitting perfectly dry on the pool deck, with little paw prints all around it.
"How did this happen?" he wondered.
From behind the tree, Mittens purred quietly, her secret safe. She had discovered something magical: when you help others, even the scariest storms can bring unexpected gifts.
From that day on, whenever lightning flashed during a storm, the children would wave at Mittens, their hero in fur. And sometimes, just sometimes, they could almost see tiny rainbows dancing around her paws.
