The Cat Who Caught Me

I was definitely not built for cross country practice. Especially not at 6 AM when even the sun was hitting snooze.

"Come on, Maya! Keep that pace up!" Coach yelled from her golf cart like I was actually training for the Olympics instead of just trying not to be the slowest sophomore on the team.

My legs burned. My lungs felt like they were hosting a protest. And I was definitely thinking about quitting.

But then there was the CAT factor. Because at home, waiting for me, was Barnaby – my grandma's cat who'd been "temporarily" staying with us for six months. And let me be real: Barnaby had attachment issues. Like, screaming-at-the-door-when-I-left type of issues.

The real problem wasn't Barnaby though. It was what happened when I finally dragged myself home after practice, sweating through my running clothes that smelled like determination and regret.

My mom, queen of wellness content, would be there with her latest creation: SPINACH smoothies.

"It's got kale, spirulina, and some new protein powder!" she'd say, way too cheerful.

"It looks like swamp water," I'd reply, but I'd drink it anyway because I was too tired to argue and also secretly afraid she'd start researching adaptogens if I complained.

Here's where things get weird. One day, I'm chugging this green sludge, and Barnaby goes absolutely feral. Like, straight-up parkours off the couch, launches himself at my face, and KNOCKS the smoothie out of my hand.

Green explosion everywhere.

My mom's phone was filming. Of course it was.

"That's going on TikTok," she said.

I died inside.

But the video went viral. Like, ACTUALLY viral. People loved Barnaby's betrayal. Someone made it a meme. Someone else remixed it with dramatic music. Suddenly I wasn't the awkward cross country girl anymore – I was the spinach smoothie cat girl.

At school, people were actually noticing me.

"Is that your cat?" asked Tyler from the track team, grinning.

"Yeah," I said. "He hates wellness."

"Good," Tyler said. "Me too. Want to run together sometime?"

And somehow, because a cat betrayed a smoothie, I got a running partner, a friend, and the confidence to show up to practice the next day at 6 AM, green smoothie in hand, ready to crush it.

Sometimes the worst moments become the best ones. Even if they involve spinach and property damage.
