The Cat Who Caught Magic

Leo loved baseball more than anything, but he wasn't very good at it. Every time he stepped up to bat, he'd swing too early or too late. One afternoon, while practicing alone in the park, he noticed a calico cat watching him from behind a tree. The cat had the most unusual amber eyes that seemed to sparkle.

"You're holding the bat too tightly," said a voice. Leo looked around, but no one was there. Then he saw the cat sitting on home plate, wearing his baseball cap like a tiny crown.

"You... you can talk?" Leo stammered.

"I'm Whiskers," the cat replied, adjusting the hat with one paw. "I've been watching you play. You're so focused on hitting home runs that you forget the magic."

"Magic in baseball?" Leo laughed.

Whiskers's tail swished excitedly. "Every baseball game is magical! But you have to stop running so fast and start feeling the game." She tapped the hat. "This belonged to my grandfather, who played for the Cloud League. They played baseball on rainbows."

Leo's eyes widened. "That's just a story!"

"Is it?" Whiskers asked mysteriously. "Put on your hat and running to first base, but close your eyes and imagine you're lighter than air."

Leo pulled the hat onto his head and started running. To his astonishment, his feet barely touched the ground. He felt like he was floating on sunshine! When he opened his eyes, Whiskers was cheering from first base.

"See?" the cat purred. "When you believe in magic, magical things happen."

That afternoon, Leo played the best game of his life. He hit every ball, not because he was stronger, but because he was having fun. Whiskers sat on the dugout bench, wearing her own tiny hat (Leo had brought an extra one), and Leo realized that friendship was the real magic all along.

From then on, every time Leo played baseball, Whiskers was there - and sometimes, just sometimes, when Leo hit a really good ball, it would sparkle like a tiny star falling from the sky.
