The Cat Who Caught Lightning
Mittens was a small orange cat with the biggest dream in the whole neighborhood. Every afternoon, she sat behind the old wooden fence watching the children play baseball. Her golden eyes would follow the flying ball, her tail twitching with excitement.
"If only I could play too," Mittens sighed, resting her chin on her paws.
One stormy evening, as gray clouds gathered overhead, the children had to leave their game unfinished. A baseball rolled near the fence, forgotten in the rush to get home before the rain. Mittens crept closer, her curiosity stronger than her caution.
Suddenly—FLASH!
A bolt of lightning struck the baseball, turning it bright blue with sparkling electricity! Instead of running away, Mittens felt a strange tingling in her paws. The ball was calling to her, humming with magical energy.
She batted it with her paw—and ZOOM! The ball shot into the air like a shooting star, trailing tiny lightning bolts behind it. Mittens leaped, her body glowing with the same blue light, and caught the ball mid-flight!
The next morning, the children returned to find Mittens sitting on home plate, the magical baseball glowing softly beside her. When she nudged it toward them, they gasped in wonder.
"She saved our game!" shouted little Tommy, the boy who always struck out.
From that day on, Mittens became the team's good luck charm. She couldn't exactly play baseball, but she had her own special job. Whenever a player felt nervous, Mittens would curl around their ankles, her fur still shimmering with tiny sparks of that lightning magic.
Tommy stepped up to the plate, his knees shaking. Mittens purred softly beside him, and suddenly he felt brave. He swung the bat—CRACK! The ball sailed over the fence!
"Thank you, Mittens!" Tommy cheered, hugging the magical cat who had once watched from outside.
Mittens purred louder than ever. She had learned something wonderful: sometimes the biggest dreams come true when you're brave enough to chase them, even during a storm.
