The Cat Who Caught Lightning

Nimbus was a small gray cat with bright yellow eyes, who lived in a cozy cottage by the sea. Every day, she sat on her windowsill, watching the fishing boats bob on the waves. She was just an ordinary cat—or so she thought.

One afternoon, as Nimbus napped near a tide pool, the sky turned dark purple. Storm clouds gathered like wooly giants, and rain began to fall. Nimbus dashed toward home, but her paw splashed into a puddle just as a bolt of lightning cracked the sky.

ZAP!

Instead of hurting her, the lightning danced across her wet fur like golden ribbons. Nimbus gasped—she could feel the energy tingling through her whiskers! The water had become her conductor, and the lightning had become her friend.

The storm grew worse. Nimbus watched through the rain as little Timmy's boat drifted too far from shore, its engine dead. The waves rose higher, and lightning struck dangerously close.

Nimbus knew what to do. She sprinted to the water's edge, dipped her paw into the sea, and waited. When lightning flashed again, she caught it—her fur glowing like a tiny star. Then, brilliant as a lighthouse beam, she directed the captured light toward Timmy's boat.

His father saw the glowing cat signaling from shore and rushed out with his fishing boat, following Nimbus's light through the dark storm. They reached Timmy just as his boat began to tip.

"Thank you!" cried Timmy, hugging Nimbus later. "You saved me!"

But Nimbus just purred. She had learned something wonderful: sometimes the smallest creatures can have the biggest powers, especially when they use them to help others. And from that day on, whenever storms gathered over the sea, the villagers knew their magical cat would be watching, ready to catch lightning and keep them safe.
