The Cat Who Caught Lightning

Lily loved rainy days. While other children stayed inside, she pressed her nose against the cold glass, watching raindrops race down the window. But today was different—today, something extraordinary waited in her garden.

A small ginger cat sat on her porch, wearing the most peculiar hat Lily had ever seen. It was tall and purple, decorated with silver stars that seemed to twinkle even in the gray afternoon light.

"Hello there," Lily whispered, stepping outside. The cat looked up with eyes like golden moons.

"This is a lightning hat," the cat said. "I'm Mittens, and I collect lightning bolts."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"

"Magic cats can do many things." Mittens twitched his whiskers. "Would you like to see where I keep my collection?"

He tapped his hat with one paw. Suddenly, brilliant lightning streaked across the sky—not scary, but beautiful, like ribbons of glowing silk. The hat pulsed with light, and before Lily could gasp, they were floating upward, riding a bolt of lightning like a magic slide.

They arrived at a castle made entirely of clouds. Inside, jars lined the walls, each containing a different colored lightning bolt. Pink for kindness, blue for bravery, green for friendship.

"Every time someone does something good, a new lightning appears," Mittens explained. "But I lost my favorite one yesterday—a gold bolt for helping a friend in need."

Lily thought about the new boy at school who sat alone at lunch. "I haven't been very friendly to him," she said quietly.

"It's never too late to start," Mittens purred.

As they floated back to Lily's porch, she understood what she must do. The next day, she invited the new boy to sit with her. When he smiled, something wonderful happened—a tiny golden spark zipped through her heart, brighter than any lightning bolt she'd ever seen.

Mittens appeared on her windowsill that evening, his silver-starred hat glowing softly. "Look in the sky," he said.

Above them, a brand new golden star twinkled. Lily had helped create her own lightning, simply by being kind.

From that day on, whenever she saw lightning, Lily knew it was someone somewhere making the world a little brighter, one good deed at a time.
