The Cat Who Caught Lightning
Ten-year-old Maya loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, she could be found running across the grassy field behind her house, practicing her swing with an old wooden bat. But today was different—the sky turned dark as a storm gathered overhead.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, and where it struck the ground, a small orange cat appeared. This wasn't any ordinary cat. Its fur crackled with tiny sparks, and its wild hair stood up like it had been rubbed with a balloon.
"Hello there!" the cat said, surprising Maya. "I'm Zappy!"
Maya dropped her baseball glove. "You can talk?"
"I can do more than talk," Zappy purred. "I come from the Cloud Kingdom, where we play the most wonderful games. Want to see?"
Without waiting for an answer, Zappy touched Maya's forehead with a sparky paw. WHOOSH! They were soaring above the baseball field, running on clouds made of cotton candy. Below them, other storm cats played baseball with balls of pure light.
"In the Cloud Kingdom," Zappy explained, "the game isn't about winning. It's about helping others have fun. That's why I came—you looked like you needed a friend."
Maya realized Zappy was right. She had been practicing alone every day because the other kids said she wasn't good enough. Her hair had been falling in her face during games, making her miss catches.
"Will you be my friend?" Maya asked.
Zappy's tail swished with joy. "Forever and always!"
Back on the ground, Maya discovered something magical—whenever she played baseball now, she could feel Zappy's encouraging purr in her heart. She started playing with others, not to show off, but to help everyone have fun. And sometimes, when lightning flashed across the sky, she'd swear she saw a sparky orange cat winking from the clouds.
Maya learned that the best kind of magic isn't lightning bolts or talking cats. It's friendship, kindness, and including everyone in the game. That's a lesson that shines brighter than any storm cloud.
