The Cat Who Caught Lightning

Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice or napped in sunbeams, Mittens watched the sky. Every night, she perched on the highest branch of the old palm tree in her backyard, waiting.

One stormy evening, something magical happened. A bolt of lightning flashed — but instead of striking the ground, it danced right toward Mittens! She reached out her paw, and to her surprise, she caught it. The lightning didn't hurt her. It felt warm and tingled like when you rub your feet on carpet.

"Whoa!" a voice said from below.

Mittens looked down. A small boy named Leo stood by the swimming pool, eyes wide. "You caught lightning!"

"I can show you something amazing," Mittens said. Yes, she could talk! The lightning had given her a special gift.

She leaped down, the glowing bolt still wrapped around her paw like a ribbon of light. "Follow me."

Mittens led Leo to the edge of the pool, which shimmered in the moonlight. She dipped her lightning-wrapped paw into the water. Suddenly, the whole pool began to glow.

"Watch," Mittens whispered.

The lightning dissolved into hundreds of tiny sparks that swam like glowing fish. They formed shapes — a whale, a castle, a dragon — all made of light!

Leo laughed with delight. He reached out his hand, and a spark landed on his palm, making his whole hand glow. "This is the best night ever!"

"Will you be my friend?" Mittens asked. "The lightning only appears for those who believe in magic."

"Always," Leo promised.

Every storm after that, Leo and Mittens would meet by the pool. The lightning would come dancing down, and together they'd create beautiful light shows that only true friends could see.

Mittens had learned something wonderful: magic is even better when you share it with someone special.
