The Cat Who Caught Lightning
Ten-year-old Leo never thought much about his orange tabby cat, Mochi, until the day of the big baseball championship. Leo's team, the Thunderbolts, was losing badly. The sky grew dark, and storm clouds gathered overhead as Leo stepped up to bat. The count was three and two—his last chance.
Mochi, who'd been sleeping near the dugout, suddenly perked up. Her fur stood straight up, and her amber eyes glowed like tiny moons. Leo held his breath as the pitcher wound up and threw the ball.
CRACK! The ball soared toward the fence—but then something magical happened. Mochi let out a soft meow, and a bolt of purple lightning shot from her paws, zapping the baseball mid-flight! The ball suddenly burst with extra speed and cleared the fence by a mile.
Leo's teammates went wild, but Leo just stared at his cat. Mochi purred proudly and trotted over to him. That's when Leo realized his friend wasn't an ordinary cat—she was a storm cat with magical powers!
Over the next few weeks, Leo and Mochi became the best of friends. They practiced together in secret, learning to control Mochi's lightning abilities. But Leo started using the magic to win every game, and soon his teammates began to feel useless. They stopped passing the ball to him, and the fun disappeared from baseball.
One evening, Mochi refused to help Leo cheat. She nudged his hand with her wet nose and meowed sternly. Leo suddenly understood—winning wasn't worth anything if it meant hurting his friends.
At the next game, Leo played without magic. He struck out twice, but when his teammate hit a home run, Leo cheered louder than anyone. His teammates smiled, and the joy of baseball returned.
That night, Mochi curled up beside Leo, her orange fur glowing softly in the moonlight. Leo realized that the real magic wasn't lightning or winning games—it was having friends who believed in you, and a cat who taught you that true champions play fair.
