The Cat Who Befriended Lightning
Mittens was no ordinary cat. She had emerald eyes that sparkled like stars, and she loved to perch on the stone wall next to the old swimming pool, watching ripples dance across the water.
One sweltering afternoon, as Mittens licked sweet papaya juice from her whiskers, the sky turned purple. CRACK! Lightning flashed, striking the papaya tree. Instead of burning, the tree began to glow. Leaves shimmered. Fruit pulsed with light.
Curious, Mittens crept closer. The pool bubbled and swirled, turning into a swirling vortex of silver light. Without thinking, she tumbled in.
She landed in a world where nothing stayed gone. wilted flowers straightened and bloomed again. Shattered apples pieced themselves together, good as new. "It's the zombie garden!" squeaked a mouse with butterfly wings. "Everything returns here."
Mittens made friends with a zombie dandelion—a cheerful flower that kept coming back no matter how many times it was picked. "Being a zombie isn't scary," it chirped. "It means you never really leave. You just grow again."
But Mittens missed home. The zombie dandelion gave her a seed: "Plant this where you belong. It'll help you return."
Lightning flashed again. Mittens grabbed the seed, tumbled back through the pool, and landed safely beside her papaya tree.
She planted the seed. Next morning, a mysterious flower bloomed—one that wilted at sunset but burst forth fresh every dawn, like magic, like friendship, like stories that never truly end.
Mittens still sits by the pool, emerald eyes watching for lightning. She's learned that some endings are just new beginnings in disguise—and that magic lives wherever you're brave enough to look.
