The Cat Under the Baseball Hat

Maya pulled her snapback low, the brim shadowing eyes that felt too exposed for this crush party. She'd spent forty minutes on her eyeliner, trying to look effortless, but now she just felt like a cat investigating a room full of dogs — tense, ready to bolt.

"You good?" Jordan asked. He'd been her friend since seventh grade, back when friendship meant sitting together at lunch because neither of you had anyone else. Now Jordan moved through crowds like he'd been born sliding into DMs, while Maya still overthought every Instagram caption.

"Yeah," she said. "Just vibing."

Liar. Her chest felt like it was bearing the weight of every conversation she wasn't having.

She escaped to the backyard, where the air was cooler and someone's calico cat was curled on a patio chair, indifferent to the bass thumping inside. Maya scratched behind its ears, grateful for an audience that didn't require performance.

"That's Patches," said a voice.

A guy in a beanie stood near the fence, holding a red Solo cup like it contained something actually good. "My sister's cat. She thinks she's people."

"Cats usually do," Maya said, then immediately wondered if that was weird.

But he laughed. "I'm Leo."

"Maya."

They stood there for twenty minutes while the cat purred between them, discussing everything and nothing — why high school felt like performance art, how they both hated group projects, the way their parents still didn't get their music. Leo admitted he'd only come because his older sister made him. Maya confessed she'd spent the last hour wishing she was home watching Netflix.

"Wanna get out of here?" Leo asked. "There's a taco truck down the street."

Inside, Jordan found them. "Leaving already?"

Maya looked at Leo, then at Jordan, who she'd known forever but barely knew anymore. "Yeah," she said, adjusting her hat. "I think I found something better."

The cat watched them go, like it knew something about friendship that humans were still learning to figure out.
