The Cat That Toppled My Social Pyramid
My social life had always been a carefully constructed pyramid. Me and Jordan at the base—solid, reliable, invisible. The jocks and popular kids formed the peak, looking down on everyone else like we were NPCs in their game. I was fine with it. Really.
Until The Incident.
It started with Mr. Henderson's cat, Barnaby—a ginger monstrosity who apparently had zero survival instincts. The dumb cat decided the school's new padel court was his personal kingdom. Every time someone tried to play, there he was, doing figure-eights around their feet or sprawling dramatically across the baseline like he owned the place.
"Someone needs to do something," Chloe said, watching from the sidelines. Chloe, who sat exactly two tiers above me in the pyramid. Chloe, whose laugh sounded like wind chimes and who I'd been crushing on since seventh grade.
I should've walked away. But Jordan was already pushing me. "Go on, mate. Be the hero."
So I approached the court. Barnaby fixed me with his most judgmental orange glare. I reached to shoo him away, and that's when it happened.
The cat went full bull mode. I'm talking head-on-a-pike, red cape, matador situation. Barnaby launched himself at my face, I stumbled back, tripped over my own feet, and proceeded to faceplant directly in front of everyone.
Chloe laughed. Not the mean laugh, but the genuine can't-breathe laugh. I wanted to dissolve into the earth.
But then—miracle of miracles—she sat beside me on the bench. "That was legendary," she said, still grinning. "Seriously. Best thing I've seen all year."
"Yeah, because I'm an idiot."
"No, because you're not afraid to look stupid." She bumped my shoulder. "Most people at this school are so obsessed with their place in the pyramid that they never take risks. You just took a cat-induced faceplant and made it legendary."
Barnaby chose that moment to trot over and headbutt my ankle. I scratched his ears, feeling something shift inside me. Maybe the pyramid wasn't as rigid as I'd thought. Maybe you could climb it—or knock it over—just by being willing to embarrass yourself a little.
"Wanna get ice cream?" Chloe asked.
"Only if we can bring the cat."
"Deal."
My pyramid was crumbling, and I couldn't wait to see what would rise from the pieces.
