The Cat That Changed Everything
Maya's hair frizzed in the humidity, mocking her attempts to look effortless. The country club pool party glittered before her — turquoise water, popular kids, and Jason, leaning against the padel court with that smile that made her stomach do backflips.
"You got this," whispered Chloe, her best friend since kindergarten. "Jason's been looking at you all day."
Maya adjusted her crop top nervously. "He's not looking at my hair disaster."
"It's not a disaster, it's texture. Own it." Chloe nudged her toward the padel court. "Jason's partner bailed. Go play with him."
Maya's palms sweated. She'd barely picked up a racquet since last summer's embarrassing incident where she'd smashed a ball into her own forehead. But Jason was waving her over, his dark hair perfectly messy.
"Hey! You play?" he called.
"Depends who you ask," Maya said, surprising herself with confidence. "I once gave myself a concussion."
Jason laughed. "Perfect. I need someone who keeps it interesting."
They played, and something weird happened — Maya was actually good. Her serve improved with every point, Jason's grin widening with each rally. For the first time all summer, she forgot about her hair, forgot about trying to look perfect.
Then it happened.
A ginger cat darted onto the court, chasing a butterfly. Jason lunged to save the ball and tripped directly over the cat, which yowled indignantly and scrambled onto Maya's shoulder.
Everyone stared. The cat dug claws into her strap. Maya's hair was definitely wrecked now. Jason was sprawled on the ground, wheezing with laughter.
"Sorry," he gasped. "That's Mr. Whiskers. He belongs to the club manager."
The cat licked Maya's ear. She started laughing too, so hard she had to sit down.
"Your hair," Chloe said later at the snack bar. "It's completely wild. And Jason watched you the entire time you played."
Maya caught her reflection in a window. Her hair WAS wild. She looked like she'd survived a windstorm with a cat attached to her head.
But Jason was walking over, carrying two strawberry sodas.
"So," he said. "Same time tomorrow? Mr. Whiskers might want a rematch."
Maya smiled, frizz and all. "Only if you promise to trip over him again."
"Deal."
