The Cat's Magic Hat
Lily's ginger cat, Pumpkin, had very particular taste. He only ate papaya from the tree in their backyard, and he always wore his favorite blue hat while eating. It was a silly hat Lily had knitted, with ear holes for his pointy ears and a little brim that flopped over one eye.
One sunny morning, Pumpkin was eating his papaya when the hat slipped over both eyes. Suddenly, the papaya began to glow!
"Lily!" Pumpkin meowed. But it wasn't a regular meow. It was a real word, spoken in a tiny, cat-like voice.
Lily's brown hair stood straight up with surprise. "You can talk?"
"Only when I wear my magic hat and eat magic papaya," Pumpkin explained. "Come with me!"
Pumpkin jumped into the air, and the hat grew enormous wings. Lily climbed onto the flying cat's back, and they soared above their neighborhood.
"Where are we going?" Lily called over the wind.
"To help someone who needs us!"
They landed in a small garden behind a gray house. There sat a boy named Toby, pushing a plate of green leaves away.
"I hate spinach," he grumbled. "It's awful."
Pumpkin hopped over and knocked his blue hat onto Toby's head.
"What are—" Toby began, but then his eyes widened. Through the magic hat, he could see glistening fairy dust on every spinach leaf. Tiny green sprites danced between the leaves, singing soft songs about strength and energy.
"It's... beautiful," Toby whispered. He tried a bite, and it tasted like sunshine and rainbows.
"Everything looks different when you really look at it," Pumpkin said wisely. "Even the things you think you won't like."
Lily understood then. She had thought her own hair was too messy and wild. But now, seeing how special her crazy curls looked when they stood up from excitement, she realized that being different was what made her wonderful.
"Thank you, Pumpkin," she hugged her cat tight. The magic hat was just an ordinary blue hat again, and Pumpkin went back to being a regular cat. But Lily and Toby both knew that sometimes, looking at things the right way can change everything.
That night, Lily helped her mom cook spinach for dinner, and Toby asked for seconds. And Pumpkin slept happily, dreaming of magical adventures, his blue hat right beside him.
