The Cat in the Lucky Hat
Maya clutched the neon beanie like it was her only lifeline. First house party. First time trying to fit in with the popular crowd. Her best friend since elementary school, Chloe, had practically begged her to come.
"You got this," Chloe said, handing her aSolo cup. "Just don't be awkward."
Easier said than done. Maya took a tiny sip. The burn hit her throat like a tractor trailer. Across the room, Jake Anderson—the Jake Anderson, varsity quarterback and walking Greek god—was holding court. Of course he was.
"That's such bull," someone laughed nearby. "No way you actually saw him at the mall."
Maya pulled her phone from her pocket and stared at the background photo: Barnaby, her fat orange cat, wearing a ridiculous witch hat from last Halloween. The picture always made her smile, which was exactly why she needed it right now.
The party continued. Some guy tried explaining how vitamin D supplements had totally changed his life. Maya nodded along, secretly wishing she'd brought her own bottle of gummy vitamins from home instead of subjecting herself to whatever weird jungle juice was in the cup.
"Nice hat," Jake Anderson said suddenly, right next to her.
Maya nearly dropped her cup. "What?"
"The beanie. Neon pink? Bold choice." He grinned. "I like it."
Her face burned hotter than whatever she was drinking. "Thanks. My cat—"
"Your cat?"
She was already committed. "Yeah, I have this orange cat named Barnaby, and last Halloween I made him wear a witch hat, and now I have this picture of him as my wallpaper, and the hat looked kind of like this beanie, so—"
She stopped. Why was she still talking?
But Jake was laughing. Not the mean laugh, but the genuine one. "That's amazing. I love cats. I have three."
Maya blinked. "Wait, really?"
"Yeah. One's a total jerk, though. His name is Bull. He knocks everything off the counters just to watch it fall."
They talked for twenty minutes about cats, stupid pet stories, and how much they both hated fake people. No weird performative coolness. No pretending to be someone they weren't.
Chloe found her later, wide-eyed. "Did you just spend half an hour talking to Jake Anderson? About cats?"
Maya smiled, pulling the neon beanie down to cover her burning cheeks. "Maybe I did."
Some nights, you discover who you really are. And some nights, you just discover that the coolest people might be weirder than you thought.
