The Cat-astrophe Protocol

Zara's phone buzzed with Caleb's text—u coming to jason's party? Her thumbs hovered. She'd been crushing on Caleb since September, and tonight was finally her chance to make a move. But first, the transformation protocol.

Step one: the hair. She'd spent three hours flat-ironing her normally frizzy curls into submission, aiming for that effortless Instagram cascade look. The bathroom mirror showed mixed results—effortless, not exactly. Desperate, more like.

Step two: the glow-up diet. Zara eyed the spinach smoothie on the counter with profound suspicion. Her wellness-influencer aunt swore by it for clear skin, but the green sludge looked like something from a nuclear accident. She chugged it anyway, gagging silently.

Then, catastrophe struck.

Luna—her aloof black cat who usually treated Zara like a disappointing roommate—decided this was the moment to stage a dramatic protest. As Zara leaned in for final lipstick application, Luna launched herself from the toilet tank, claws out, directly onto Zara's head.

"NO! My hair!"

The struggle was epic. Zara flailed, Luna yowled, and somehow—somehow—a massive glob of spinach smoothie residue from Zara's upper lip ended up smeared across her front teeth. Green. Glittering. Undeniable.

She looked in the mirror. Hair: destroyed, sticking up in seven directions. Teeth: spinach disaster. Cat: grooming herself casually on the bathmat like nothing happened.

Zara started crying. Then she started laughing.

Because suddenly it was all so ridiculous—this whole performance she'd been putting on for months. The straight hair she hated maintaining. The gross smoothies. The careful curation of her personality to match what she thought Caleb wanted. Luna had literally clawed through the façade.

She texted Caleb back: actually, might skip tonight. not feeling it.

His reply came instantly: lol ok. maybe next time.

No desperate pleas to come anyway. No real disappointment. Just... whatever.

Zara wiped the spinach from her teeth, ran a hand through her wrecked hair, and grinned at her reflection. Maybe she'd order pizza. Maybe she'd let her curls go wild. Maybe she'd finally befriend Luna, who was now purring loudly and rubbing against her ankle like she'd planned the whole intervention.

"You know what," Zara said, scratching Luna's ears. "I think we're gonna get along fine."

Her phone buzzed again. Another notification. This time from her friend group chat: movie night at mine?? emoji spam

Yeah. That sounded way better.
