The Cat and the Cap

Marcus adjusted the brim of his faded Red Sox hat, trying to look casual. Like he belonged here. Like he hadn't spent the last month panic-scrolling through TikTok whenever anyone mentioned tryouts.

"You ready or what?" Jax called from the pitcher's mound, spinning the ball in his hand. "Or you gonna keep standing there looking like you're about to puk—"

"Chill," Marcus cut him off, though his stomach was definitely doing somersaults. "I got this."

He stepped up to the plate. The baseball field stretched out before him, sun glinting off the chain-link backstop. First official day of freshmen team practice, and the universe had already decided to test him.

A blur of orange darted across the dirt behind home plate.

"Yo, what the—" Marcus started, then froze. A cat. A genuinely tiny, ginger cat was sprinting across the infield like it owned the place. It stopped at second base, sat down, and started cleaning its paw with total disregard for the fact that twenty confused teenage boys were staring at it.

"That's a cat," someone said.

"No dip, Sherlock," Jax rolled his eyes. "Hey new kid, go get it out of here. Coach will have a cow if he sees—"

"Bull," someone else snickered. "You mean he'll have a bull."

The whole team cracked up. Because apparently in their world, Coach Miller's temper was legendary enough to warrant actual bovine comparisons.

Marcus looked at the cat. The cat looked at Marcus. Something passed between them — a recognition, almost. Like they were both just trying to survive in a world that kept moving too fast.

He jogged over, squatted down, and held out his hand. The cat didn't run. It actually — incredibly — head-butted his palm.

"What's your deal, little dude?" Marcus whispered. The cat purred so loud he could feel it through his fingertips.

"Alright, love connection over," Jax called. "Get it out of here, Marcus. We're running drills."

Marcus scooped up the cat like it was the most natural thing in the world. It curled instantly into his arms, purring against his chest. He walked toward the parking lot, the team's eyes following him. For the first time all day, the panic in his chest had been replaced by something else. Something solid.

He set the cat down near the bushes. "Stay safe out there, okay?"

The cat blinked at him once, then vanished into the shadows.

When Marcus turned back to the field, half the team was actually nodding at him. Not looking through him, not waiting for him to mess up. Just... nodding. Like maybe he was one of them now.

He adjusted his hat and stepped into the batter's box.

"Alright," Jax said, and Marcus could hear the grin in his voice. "Let's see what you got."

The first pitch came flying. Marcus didn't think. He just swung.

Crack.

The ball sailed into center field. Perfect. Solid. His.

"Okay," Marcus breathed into the echo. "Okay then."

His heart was racing, but not from panic anymore. From the raw, bright certainty that sometimes, when you least expect it, you find your footing in the weirdest places. Like a dusty baseball field. In a borrowed hat. With a cat as your unlikely wingman.
