The Calibration Game

Leo's phone died at 2:47 PM — exactly thirty-seven minutes before Emma said she'd be at Tyler's pool party. The charging cable sat mocking him from his bedroom floor, miles away at his house. His heart did that thing where it forgot its rhythm, beating like a clumsy drummer at their first rehearsal. Being stranded without your phone at a high school summer party was basically social suicide.

The pool glittered with afternoon light, bodies splashing and laughter ricocheting off the fence. Tyler's parents were loaded — they even had a padel court in the backyard, whatever that was. Some sport Tyler kept going on about, like tennis but cooler, though nobody actually played. The net sagged between the posts like an abandoned trampoline.

"Yo, Leo!" Tyler materialized at his side, holding a paper plate. "Try my mom's spinach dip. It's actually mid, not gonna cap."

Leo took a chip, mostly to have something to do with his hands. The dip was actually good, but admitting it would violate the unspoken rule that parents' food attempts were automatically cringe. He spotted Emma across the deck, talking to some junior. She wore that blue bikini that made his brain short-circuit.

Then he saw it: Tyler's cat, Barnaby, crouched under the patio table, eyes fixed on something in the bushes. The cat's tail twitched with predatory calculation. Leo found himself weirdly rooting for the cat. At least someone here had a mission.

"So," Emma said, suddenly beside him, smelling like coconut sunscreen and everything he'd been trying not to think about all summer. "You avoiding me or just pretending to be busy?"

They ended up cross-legged on the patio, his phone charging between them, talking about nothing and everything. The spinach dip sat forgotten. Barnaby pounced on something in the bushes. Tyler attempted to explain padel rules to anyone who'd listen. And for the first time all summer, Leo's heart remembered how to beat properly.
