The Cafeteria Spy Network

Maya slid into her usual seat, casually positioning her phone to capture the perfect angle of Jake across the cafeteria. The unofficial social pyramid of Northwood High placed him firmly at the apex — varsity basketball, perfect hair, that smile that could literally end worlds. Meanwhile, Maya was somewhere in the middle layers, navigating high school like it was an elaborate game she hadn't agreed to play.

"You're doing it again," Lex whispered, sliding into the seat beside her. "The spy thing. It's borderline creepy, Maya."

"It's not spying," Maya protested, though her cheeks burned. "It's... strategic observation."

"You've been strategically observing him since September." Lex poked at her own lunch with a fork. "Meanwhile, I'm genuinely trying to figure out why someone thought orange was an appetizing color for this mac and cheese."

Maya laughed, finally glancing down at her own tray. The cafeteria had served wilted spinach again — practically a vegetable war crime. She pushed it around with her fork, trying to work up the courage to mention that Jake had actually smiled at her in the hallway yesterday.

"Something happened," Lex said suddenly, eyes narrowing. "What happened?"

"He smiled at me. In the hall."

Lex gasped. "No way."

"Way. And not like, polite smile. Like, actual smile."

Before Lex could respond, Maya's phone buzzed. A notification from Jake himself: *Hey, I noticed you sitting near the window. Your photography Instagram is actually really good.*

Maya stared at the screen. The social pyramid had just officially collapsed.

"He's coming over here," Lex hissed.

Jake approached their table, looking equal parts nervous and confident. "Hey. Mind if I sit?"

Maya found her voice. "Sure. Just warning you though, the spinach is questionable."

Jake laughed, and just like that, Maya wasn't spying anymore. She was finally just... living it.
