The Cafeteria Showdown
Maya's first week at Northwood High was going about as well as you'd expect — until today's lunch disaster. She'd spent thirteen years being the quiet kid who blended into lockers, and eighth grade wasn't supposed to be any different.
Then came the spinach incident.
She'd packed her own lunch because the cafeteria food was reportedly lethal. But somehow, while trying to extract herself from a conversation with Tyler — the junior who looked like he'd walked straight out of a coming-of-age movie — a spinach leaf launched itself from her braces and landed directly on his pristine white hoodie.
The entire cafeteria went dead silent. Tyler stared at her. Maya considered faking a sudden medical emergency just to escape.
"Yo, that's wild," someone whispered. Maya's face burned hotter than any blush she'd ever experienced.
"Sorry," she squeaked.
But then something unexpected happened. Tyler laughed. Not mean-laughed, but actually laughed. "Dude, that was legendary. You literally bull-dozed through that conversation."
The tension broke. Someone snorted. Someone else said, "No cap, that was cinematic."
The real turning point came when Brianna, the girl who'd already established herself as the unofficial queen bee of the freshman class, walked over. Maya's stomach did that thing where it feels like it's trying to exit through your throat.
"You good?" Brianna asked, actually looking concerned. "That was lowkey embarrassing but also kind of iconic."
"I think I need to bear witness to my own social suicide," Maya muttered, then realized she'd said it out loud.
Brianna grinned. "Nah, you're good. Sit with us."
Maya blinked. "What?"
"You heard me. Anyone who can accidentally weaponize spinach and still keep their cool deserves to sit at the bear's table." She gestured to the group behind her. "That's what we call our friend group. Because we're scary fierce, obviously."
For the first time in her life, Maya didn't feel like background character in someone else's movie. She felt like the main character — or at least, a supporting role with actual lines.
"I'm Maya," she said, grabbing her tray.
"Brianna. And that spinach leaf? That's your ticket in. Nobody forgets a legendary entrance."
