The Cafeteria Pyramid Scheme

Maya scanned the lunchroom, her stomach doing that familiar thing where it felt like it was about to stage a mutiny. Freshman year was basically one long exercise in feeling like a zombie—four hours of sleep, three exams, and approximately zero friends who actually got her jokes.

"Hey Maya!" Katie waved from their usual table. "Saved you a spot!"

But before Maya could move, she froze. The Cool Table™—otherwise known as the social pyramid's apex—had just gestured toward her. Taylor, with her perfect hair and somehow-still-fresh outfit even after soccer practice, was actually smiling.

"Maya!" Taylor called out. "Come sit with us!"

Maya's brain short-circuited. This was it. Her ticket up the pyramid. No more sitting with the band kids who discussed marching formations like they were military strategies. She could finally level up.

She grabbed her lunch bag and headed over, her heart pounding like she'd just run a mile. As she sat down, she realized her fatal mistake: her mom had packed her favorite comfort food—sautéed spinach with garlic and papaya slices from their backyard tree.

"What's THAT?" asked Brianna, wrinkling her nose like she'd just smelled something dead.

"It's... spinach. And papaya." Maya's face burned. "It's actually really—"

"That's so random." Taylor giggled. "My trainer says papaya has, like, way too much sugar."

"And spinach?" Brianna made a gagging face. "That's literally rabbit food."

Maya looked down at her lunch, suddenly seeing it through their eyes. Weird. Different. Not quite right.

"Yeah, well," she stood up, her tray clattering slightly, "it's what I like."

She turned and walked back to Katie's table, sitting down with a thud.

"Wait, why'd you come back?" Katie asked, eyes wide.

Maya took a bite of her spinach, letting the garlic and warmth fill her mouth. "Because honestly? I'd rather be a weird zombie who eats what she wants than part of their pyramid."

"Plus," she added, grinning, "my mom's papaya is actually fire. Want some?"

Katie laughed. "Only if you promise not to judge mypb&j."

"Deal."

Maya took another bite, finally feeling like she was waking up from the zombie haze. Maybe freshman year wasn't about climbing the pyramid after all. Maybe it was about building your own table.
