The Cafeteria Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at the school cafeteria map she'd drawn in her notebook — a literal pyramid of social dominance, with seniors at the apex and freshmen like her at the rocky bottom. Next to it, someone had drawn a tiny spinach leaf as a cruel annotation.

"Nice diagram, Freakachu," Seth said, sliding into the seat across from her. He was a sophomore, practically royalty in the pyramid hierarchy.

Maya slammed her notebook shut. "It's for geometry. We're studying triangular structures."

"In geometry class? During lunch?" Seth raised an eyebrow, then smirked. "Whatever. But seriously, you've got something on your face."

Maya's stomach dropped. She'd been so nervous about her first day at this new school that she'd barely eaten breakfast. Now her face was decorated with food debris. Classic.

"Hold on." Seth reached into his backpack and pulled out a container of chopped fruit. "My mom's obsessed with tropical antioxidants. Try some papaya."

The bright orange cubes looked like tiny suns against the dull cafeteria table. Maya hesitated, then took one. It was sweet and impossibly soft, like eating a cloud.

"Not bad, right?"

"Actually... yeah." Maya relaxed slightly. "Thanks."

"You know," Seth said, leaning in, "that pyramid you drew? It's BS. Nobody actually cares about that stuff except the people who think they're at the top. And they're usually just compensating for something."

Maya blinked. A sophomore was actively dismantling the social hierarchy she'd spent all morning obsessing over.

"Besides," he grinned, "my little sister's a freshman and she says you're the only person who actually listens when she talks about her art. That's rare."

Maya felt something shift inside her chest. Maybe the cafeteria wasn't a battlefield after all. Maybe it was just a room full of people trying to figure themselves out, some with papaya and some without.

"Hey," she said, opening her notebook back up. "Want to help me redesign this? I'm thinking more of a circle."

Seth popped a papaya cube into his mouth. "Abso-freaking-lutely."
