The Cafeteria Comeup
Maya's first day as a freshman wasn't going according to plan. The Northwood High cafeteria was basically a battlefield of social hierarchies, and she was wandering through it like she'd forgotten the basic rules of engagement.
She'd spent way too long on her hair that morning, attempting perfect beach waves from TikTok. Now, standing in the lunch line in her oversized orange sweater, she felt like a traffic cone trying too hard.
"Maya! Over here!"
It was Chloe from English class, waving from a table near the windows. Maya's stomach did that thing where it simultaneously dropped and soared. She grabbed a tray and loaded up on whatever looked decent: papaya from the fruit bar, questionable orange chicken, and a salad with spinach.
The papaya had been her mom's idea. "Exotic fruits show you're cultured," she'd said, completely missing that being 'cultured' wasn't really a thing freshman year. But Maya had taken it anyway because anything was better than standing there empty-handed.
She sat down across from Chloe, who was mid-story about some junior's party.
"...and apparently Tyler and Emma almost hooked up, but then—"
Maya nodded like she knew who Tyler and Emma were. She didn't. She took a bite of the papaya—mushy and weirdly sweet, like someone had described tropical fruit but never let her taste it.
"What is that?" Chloe asked.
"Papaya. My mom said it's supposed to be good for... skin?"
Chloe stared, then burst out laughing. "Dude, that's literally so random. I love it."
Maya blinked. "Wait, really?"
"Yeah! Everyone's so basic. You're out here eating papaya like it's normal. That's main character energy."
Something shifted inside Maya's chest, light and surprising. Then she caught her reflection in the window—spinach stuck between her front teeth. Of course.
"You got a little..." Chloe gestured, grinning. "But honestly? It adds character."
Maya grabbed a napkin, laughing despite herself. The orange sweater still felt too loud, the papaya was weird, and she had spinach in her teeth. But sitting here with Chloe who didn't care about any of that, she thought maybe freshman year wouldn't be so bad.
Maybe being awkward was just part of the comeup.
