The Cafeteria Catastrophe

Maya's first week at Northwood High wasn't going exactly to plan. Between getting lost on the way to AP Bio and accidentally calling her history teacher "Mr. Mom" because he looked exactly like her friend's dad, she was ready to ghost everyone and become a mysterious loner who ate lunch in the library.

But fate had other plans.

The cafeteria was a battlefield of social hierarchies. Theater kids in the corner, debate team dominating the back tables, and the popular crowd holding court near the windows. Maya grabbed a tray, her heart doing that nervous flutter thing it always did when too many people were watching.

The lunch lady served her a sad-looking scoop of creamed spinach and an orange that had seen better days. "First week's always rough," the lady said with a knowing smile. "You'll figure it out."

Maya spotted an empty seat next to a girl with purple headphones and a sketchbook. Perfect. Non-threatening, probably artistic, definitely wouldn't judge her spinach situation.

She made it three steps before disaster struck. Someone—she never figured out who—bumped into her hard from behind. Her tray flew upward in what felt like slow motion, performing a perfect arc before crash-landing on the popular table.

Creamed spinach splattered across Jayden's pristine white sneakers. The orange rolled dramatically across the table, knocking over a vanilla iced coffee before coming to rest against someone's phone.

The entire cafeteria went dead silent.

Maya's face burned so hot she thought she might literally combust. "I—" she started, but her voice squeaked. "I'm so—"

"That's messed up," Jayden said, looking at her spinach-covered sneakers.

But then the purple-headphones girl appeared beside her. "Dude, that was actually legendary." She pulled a handful of napkins from her pocket like she'd been waiting for exactly this moment. "I'm Jordan, by the way."

Maya helped clean up the spinach disaster while Jordan made the situation ten times better by loudly announcing, "This is art now. The spinach represents our collective trauma."

Jayden actually laughed. When the cleanup was done, she waved Maya over. "Sit here. But you're on probation for the spinach incident."

Maya glanced at Jordan, who winked. Sometimes the worst moments become the best origin stories.
