The Cable We Tether

spycablefoxfriend

Maya found the bug behind her television cabinet at 2 AM — a small cylindrical device clamped to the coaxial cable, glowing with a faint green pulse. She'd been working late again, grading papers while her husband slept, when the reflection caught her eye.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Julian: 'You found it.'

Julian had been her friend since college, the one who'd recommended her for the university position, who'd introduced her to David. For three years, he'd been the steady presence at their dinner parties, the godfather to their cat.

'Spying on me, Julian? Really?' she typed, hands shaking.

The confession spilled out in fragments. He'd been hired by David's ex-wife to gather evidence for the custody battle. He needed the money. He'd tried to talk his way out of it, then justified it as a means to an end. 'You and David are solid,' he'd written in his report. 'No red flags. Just... lonely evenings. Her grading stack is taller than their conversation logs.'

Maya sat on the floor, surrounded by disconnected cables, and wept not for the betrayal but for the accuracy of it. Her marriage had become a series of parallel solitudes, two people sharing a bed but not a life. And her friend — her best friend — had documented every lonely evening for thirty pieces of silver.

A fox screamed outside her window, that sharp barking cry that always sounded human. She remembered hiking with Julian once, years ago, when they'd seen a red fox darting through the underbrush. 'Sneaky bastards,' he'd said, admiringly. 'But they survive because they notice everything.'

She thought about pulling the cables from the wall, about disappearing into the static. Instead, she called David's name, listened to him grunt awake in the next room.

'I think we need to talk,' she said, and for the first time in months, the static between them finally cleared.
