The Cable That Saved Us

I sat on my bedroom floor, surrounded by tangled wires like some kind of tech disaster zone. My best friend Sarah was supposed to help me come out to my other friends over Discord tonight, but of course my internet chose THIS moment to completely give up.

"Just bear with me," I muttered, yanking at the coaxial cable that had somehow worked its way behind my dresser. I could hear Sarah's voice through my phone—she was already in the call, waiting. Probably wondering where I was. Probably annoyed.

We'd been friends since seventh grade, but lately I felt like I was drifting. Like everyone was moving forward and I was stuck in place, too scared to say the words that had been sitting in my chest for months. I'm gay. The thought made my hands shake as I wrestled with the cable.

My foot caught on something. I tumbled sideways, knocking over my half-empty Mountain Dew can. Liquid everywhere. Perfect.

But then I saw it—glinting under my bed. The spare ethernet cable my cousin had given me last year. I lunged for it, crawling on my knees through the sticky mess. Connected it to my laptop in about three seconds flat. The Discord icon flickered to life.

"You okay?" Sarah's voice popped through my headphones. "You went AFK like five minutes ago."

"Yeah, just... technical difficulties." I took a breath. "Hey, I need to tell you something."

The cable was loose. My heart was racing. But for the first time in forever, I didn't feel like hiding. I'd just crawled through spilled soda and dust bunnies for a chance to be real.

"I'm gay," I said. "And I'm scared, but I wanted you to know."

Silence stretched between us. Then Sarah's voice came through, soft but clear. "Finally. I've been waiting forever for you to say that."

She laughed. I did too. The cable connection was perfect. Sometimes the worst mess-ups lead to the best moments. And sometimes, when you're ready to stop hiding, even a tangled-up cable can't stop you from being heard.
