The Cable That Connected Us

Leo pulled his beanie **hat** down lower, trying to disappear. Freshman year at Northwood High was exactly the nightmare everyone warned about, and he'd only survived two weeks by becoming a professional avoider.

His curly brown **hair** was getting too long again, curling over his ears. His mom kept nagging him about a haircut, but he liked the extra layer of protection. The hat + hair combo was basically a force field against social interaction.

"Hey, you heading to the gaming club?"

Leo froze. Maya Chen. Junior. Beautiful. terrifying. She stood in the hallway holding a tangled mess of HDMI **cable**.

"Uh, no?" he managed, voice cracking. spectacular.

"Good, you're free. The AV club is short-handed for the assembly setup. Come help." She shoved the cable into his hands before he could protest.

The auditorium was dark, illuminated only by the glow of the massive projector screen. Leo stood on a wobbly ladder, threading cables through the ceiling rafters while Maya directed him from below.

"Okay, now connect that to the—watch out!" Maya yelped as Leo's hat caught on a loose wire.

His beanie slipped off. His hair sprang free—a wild, uncontainable halo of frizz. He froze, exposed.

But Maya didn't laugh. "Your hair is sick. I've been trying to get mine to do that texture thing for years."

Leo blinked. "Really? I mean, thanks?"

"Really. Anyway, hook up that last cable and we're done."

As he connected everything, the projector roared to life, bathing them in brilliant blue light. They sat on the edge of the stage, sharing a stolen moment in the empty auditorium.

"You should join gaming club," Maya said suddenly. "We need people who actually know tech stuff. Plus," she grinned, "you can't hide under that hat forever."

Leo touched his hair, surprised to find he didn't mind it being so visible. "Maybe I'll stop by Tuesday."

"Tuesday it is. And Leo?" She called as she walked away, "bring the hair. The hat's optional."
