The Cable Snapped

runningzombiepadelspinachcable

Marcus was running when it happened—the cable just snapped. Not the metaphorical one everyone talked about at dinner parties, the one that supposedly held his marriage together or kept him from jumping off the roof. This was an actual cable, thick and black, whipping through the air of the gym like an angry snake.

He'd been running on the treadmill for forty-five minutes, three days a week, for seven years. His body moved through the motions while his mind floated somewhere else, always somewhere else. At forty-three, Marcus had become a master of the zombie state—present enough to sign checks, attend parent-teacher conferences, and nod during board meetings, but fundamentally absent from his own life.

The flying cable knocked over his water bottle. Spinach-colored liquid—some protein monstrosity he'd started drinking instead of breakfast—splashed across the rubber floor. A woman in matching neon looked at him with mild concern. Marcus stared back. He couldn't remember the last time he'd felt something genuine.

"You okay?" she asked.

Marcus laughed. It came out rusty and unfamiliar. "The cable snapped."

"Yeah, I saw. Are you hurt?"

"No," he said. "I think I'm finally awake."

He left the gym still dripping sweat, called his wife from the parking lot and told her he couldn't do it anymore—not the padel tournaments with the senior partners, not the spinach smoothies, not the marathon training she'd signed him up for without asking. He was done running from himself. Elena was quiet for a long time. When she finally spoke, her voice cracked with something that sounded like relief.

"I know," she said. "I've been waiting for you to notice."

Marcus sat in his car, engine idling, and realized the cable hadn't snapped at all. It had been cut. By him. Slowly, deliberately, one compromise at a time, until the tension became too much. He wiped spinach residue from his chin and started the engine. For the first time in years, he was actually going somewhere.
